Side effects can be worrying but they are often better than putting up with an unmanaged condition or a pet that is suffering. Your vet will try to minimise side effects by prescribing the most suitable steroid at an appropriate dose. What are steroids?

Age can also be a factor with young children and older people more commonly experiencing side effects. If you have steroids as part of treatment for Hodgkin lymphoma, you might be given them intravenously, at the same time as your chemotherapy. With non-Hodgkin lymphoma, you might have steroids for a few days or a week during each cycle of chemotherapy.

• Steroids can cause thinning of the skin, which can make you bruise more easily than usual – this is further increased if you have thrombocytopenia.
• You may gain weight, or your face, ankles and legs may swell.
• In many cases it can take as long as 5 to 10 days after injection for the benefits to show.
• Steroids are of most benefit if the last dose is given to you between 24 hours and 1 week before the birth of your baby.
• Having this problem can affect your body’s ability to cope with stress.
